Da Capo Vineyards hosts Italian Harvest Picnic

INVITATION TO THE DA CAPO VINEYARDS HARVEST PICNIC

Sunday 1st of March 2009 : 10h00am

The Bottega family and the Fogolar Furlan (or Friuli society) are bringing together the Italian community at the 3rd annual Da Capo Vineyards’ Harvest Celebration which will take place on Sunday 1st March.

Arrive at the picnic site by 10am (and to avoid Argus traffic) should you wish to participate in the picking as the tractors and trailers will be leaving shortly thereafter for the vineyards.  The ceremonial stomping in the open vats will also take place before lunch this year. Please remember to bring a change of clothing and a towel, or even better a swimming costume, for stomping on the grapes! Hand showering facilities will be provided.

The lunch time braai will be served from 13h00 and will once again be prepared by the Fogolar Furlan, who did a great job last year. The charge for the braai will be a very reasonable R100 a head for adults (R85 for Fogolar members) and R50 for children (R45 Fogolar). Tickets for the braai will be on sale at the entrance to the picnic site. A range of wines for drinking and tasting will be provided free of charge by the Bottega family, in addition to jugs of spring water sourced from Da Capo. If you would like to consume other beverages besides wine or water, please bring your own cooler boxes with ice, cold drinks, fruit juices, beer or ciders. There will be limited seating at some long tables as usual but if you prefer to bring your own picnic blankets/ground sheets or extra picnic tables and chairs to put under the pine trees, this will help as we are expecting more people to attend the event this year. In case we get some wind, please bring along a sweater or wind breaker, and of course plenty of sunblock and hats or caps for the grape picking!! We will send an update on the expected weather conditions in the reminder the week of the picnic.

We will also be arranging some activities to keep the kiddies occupied (table soccer, horse rides, and a petting zoo) and there will be some traditional Italian and Cape music to entertain everyone. This year the Fogolar will be selling the picnic wine that was made last year for R20 a bottle (or R100 for a case of 6) to do some fundraising and, of course, the event would not be the same without the wonderful prizes that will be raffled by the Fogolar so please remember to bring a few extra rands to buy some raffle tickets.

Idiom Collection of Wines available for exclusive tasting at the Decanter New World Fine Wine Encounter

May 9th will see a celebration of the best of the New World at the Decanter New World Fine Wine Encounter, and the award-winning South African IDIOM Collection of Da Capo Vineyards, which has already wowed South African judges, is delighted to have been among the smaller producers selected to participate in London.
“Idiom is about discovery, exploration and the enjoyment of a special collection of wines. There has been an incredible amount of care taken to create wines of individual excellence,” says owner Alberto Bottega whose diverse portfolio of bold, expressive wines is designed to appeal equally to wine lovers and connoisseurs.
Da Capo with its dual meaning of “from the beginning” in Italian and “from the Cape”, is ideally situated to create unique wines comparable with the famous wines of Bordeaux, the Rhone, Tuscany and Piemonte but expressed in the Cape wine landscape, or Cape idiom. The wines demonstrate a true sense of place, expressing the terroir of the high-lying vineyards on the slopes of the Hottentots Holland Mountains and cooled by maritime breezes from False Bay in South Africa’s fairest Cape. IDIOM is vinified at Whalehaven boutique winery in Hermanus.
The Idiom Collection comprises big blends and also more exotic single varietal wines including a selection of Italian wines rooted in the Bottega family heritage.
The Idiom Bordeaux style blend 2005 was recently awarded a gold medal in the 2008 Swiss International Airlines Wine Awards after the 2004 vintage won a Double Gold at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards in South Africa. The medium to full-bodied Cape blend 2005 with 40% Pinotage has won silver medals at the South African Veritas and Michelangelo awards in 2007/8. The Rhone style blend 2006  (Shiraz/ Mouvedre/ Viognier) received 4 stars from Decanter UK.
The Collection’s rarer single varietals have taken the South African market by storm. The Sangiovese has been selected twice to represent South Africa at the Tri-nations Wine Challenge in Sydney, while the Zinfandel 2006 has been described by prominent South African wine writers as a “cult in the making”. The wooded Viognier, also a gold medal winner at the Michelangelo Awards in 2008, is the only white wine in the Idiom range. In a limited edition of approximately 900 bottles, a Nebbiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon and SMV have also been added to the exclusive 900 Series collection.
“The common theme in all our wines is healthy, ripe fruit. While all the wines in the collection are rich and intense, each wine also has its own unique note which differentiates it and leads to wonderful food pairing opportunities” adds Bottega. The wine is a family affair – with father Alberto at the helm with Roberto, Laura and Silvana Bottega all involved the promotion of South Africa’s newest luxury wine brand.
